All Saint's Church, Old Glossop

A ghost known locally as the 'Grey Lady' is said to haunt the vicarage and churchyard of All Saint's Church in Old Glossop which has been the location of several unusual and unexplained sightings over the years. While it is quite a well known ghost story, the actual details are difficult to pin down and she is described in various ways and reported in various locations but always around the church.

Another former vicar of Glossop, John Knowles, saw a 'tall, slim woman' on a number of occasions during his family's stay at the vicarage (1865 to 1888), but he could never clearly see her face. On one occasion he was brave enough (or stupid enough!) to approach her as she stood on the lawn, but she walked off into some shrubs and disappeared.

He was seen again the following Sunday in the kitchen.

A story was put about that the house was supposed to be haunted by a former vicar who was murdered by his wife, who then threw his body into a well. In fact there are no local records of such a thing happening.
