Saunder's Cross house

This picture shows a tall house at the side of woodhead main road in tintwistle the reason that this house is so tall is that the man that owned it didn’t have enough money for more land so he build upwards to save money. The house is called Sander's Cross (the name is engraved at the front of the house) because the last man to be hung in the village was hung at the back of the house - a Mr Sanders, he was hung for cattle rustling. It is known as the monkey house because many years ago, before vegetarianism was the norm they had a family of vegetarians living there, known by the community as the monkeys and hence the monkey house was born.
